Designed by Clare Waight Keller, the Givenchy collection for Spring Summer 2020 combines fractal symmetries from the botanical world with tough urban energy. From the blossoms of old-world Paris to the raw denim spirit of New York City, summertime memories invoke liberated femininity with a poetic lightness of hand.
Hothouse colors from marigold to magenta, cerulean and emerald swirl against sandy neutrals and monochrome hound’s tooth. A universe of abstract flora from around the world comes to life in ultra-saturated pigment prints of chintz, pomegranates… They appear with crisp poplin, canvas, and taffeta blouses, over-skirts, and sundresses.
Hourglass tailoring sans lapel joins the new suit silhouette of a long, slim jacket and shell-knit Bermuda shorts. Smooth leather trench coats, bandana tops, and bustiers transform soft drape into something architectural and opulent. 90s denim is upcycled as distressed shorts, wide two-tone jeans and column skirts, contrasting with the meticulous construction of the season’s volumes. Rolled scarf and halter necklines, flounced sleeves and knotted bows.
For evening, those shapes gather and fall off shoulders. Unfurling folds of plissé stripe, jacquard or guipure lace embellished with threadwork patches and sprigs of crystal jasmine.
